Strikethrough Text Generator — Cross Out Text to Copy & Paste

Who this is for: For jokes, corrections, and fake-out captions on platforms without a strike-through button — the punchline format of quote-tweets and group chats.

Not the right tool for: Truly deleted text — the words remain in the string; screen readers may read strikethrough text as if it weren't crossed out · Documents with native formatting — in editors with a real strike button, native formatting is searchable and accessible

Cross out text anywhere: Unicode strikethrough and slash styles that work on platforms without formatting buttons.

Quick answer: Unicode strikethrough appends a combining stroke (U+0336) after each letter: "Hello World" → H̶e̶l̶l̶o̶ ̶W̶o̶r̶l̶d̶. The Slashed variant (H̷e̷l̷l̶o̷ with U+0337) gives a scratch-out look. Both paste into any text field, no formatting needed.

14/200 characters — every style updates live. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How does strikethrough work in plain text?

The generator appends a combining stroke character (U+0336) after every letter you type. Each stroke overlays the letter before it, so "Hello World" becomes H̶e̶l̶l̶o̶ ̶W̶o̶r̶l̶d̶ — even in apps with no formatting at all. The Slashed variant uses a combining short solidus (U+0337) instead, for a H̷e̷l̷l̷o̷ scratch-out look. Both survive copy-paste everywhere because they are ordinary text, and removing the effect is as simple as deleting and retyping without the hidden strokes.

Common uses

  • Joke corrections: best pizza in t̶o̶w̶n̶ (okay — the whole region)
  • Fake-out captions and self-aware quote tweets
  • Crossing off list items in shared notes and chats
  • Redacted-document memes

Frequently Asked Questions

Does strikethrough work on X/Twitter and Instagram?
Yes — both render the combining strokes, since they are just text. Discord and WhatsApp support them too (Discord also has real ~~markdown~~, but the Unicode version survives in nicknames and places markdown doesn't reach).
Why does the line look gappy in some fonts?
Each combining stroke attaches to the glyph before it; font rendering decides how perfectly they join. Most modern fonts bridge the gaps — a few typefaces leave small breaks between characters. The text is still correct either way.
Is strikethrough text bad for accessibility?
Somewhat: screen readers may ignore the combining strokes entirely and read the word as if nothing were crossed out. Keep actual corrections and important disclaimers in plain words, and use strikethrough for comedy.
